Week 6 Story: The Tragedy of the Kings Sons
There was once a ruthless king, Peter, who, within his kingdom, could take or have whatever he wanted. One day while walking with his seven wives he came across a woman of surpassing beauty. Her name was Olga. She was the Inventors daughter. Everyone in town thought it weird that she enjoyed reading and learning, as she was a woman, but her father was always encouraging her to pursue what makes her happy. One day the king saw her incredible beauty and declared she must be his. Unwanted she refused, but she was forced into marrying him. She was his prisoner. The king wished to make beautiful babies with her. So she got pregnant. She birthed the child, but she could not bear to hold the child of this monster in her hands, so she brought it to the nearby river and let it drift away. This occurred seven times.
The king was furious. All he wanted was to have a beautiful son to be the heir to his throne, but every time he tries she would carry them off to the river. The 8th time however was the final straw. He could not bear to lose another one of his children to this woman, no matter how beautiful she was. He banished her from his kingdom for what shew had done. He began to live a normal, kingly life again, until Olga returned from her banishment. She presented him with a child. She said: "Here is a noble son worthy to become the heir of your kingdom". Although King Peter was initially against the idea, the immense beauty of this child was too great to ignore. He named the child Fred. It was from then on that Fred was his own child and should one day take the throne. Olga disappeared after this and was never heard from again. This was probably due to the lack of available communication in Peter's kingdom.
Author's Note: This is based off of (King Shantanu and Ganga Author: Donald Mackenzie) where a king marries a beautiful wife, but she is forced to release her babies celestial souls to the heavens about after birth. The king get mads after the eighth time and she leaves, but she brings back a son. Who is the son of the sun god and herself, thus he too is beautiful.

This is a really dark twist on the story of Ganga and Shantanu! The names and setting really evoke a medieval tone for the story, and this is dark enough to be considered in the same realm of King Henry's wives.
ReplyDeleteI wish it was a little longer, and I also find myself wanting to know how King Peter treated Fred.
The story also feels like it could be a great launch point for the future adventures of Fred, who is bound to have some special tricks up his sleeve.
Hey there, Zach! I really like your take on this story. I wasn’t a big fan of the original story, and your version is much more readable. I thought the line at the end was really funny. I am confused as to why she returned to the kingdom with her 8th son. If she couldn’t stand having his child drowned the other 7, what made this one different?
ReplyDeleteHello again!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with Laura that your story is a bit darker than the original, but I think it emphasizes how awful Ganga's life was at the time. I like the picture you added because it really helps visualize the scene! I think adding a bit more descriptive words would be good, like how Olga looks and Fred too since you describe them as being beautiful.
